Occre's detailed 1/70 scale kit recreates this celebrated Spanish ship of the line, which fought at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. ABOUT THE KIT:
Occre's Montañés captures the distinctive appearance of an 18th-century Spanish warship, from her imposing gun decks and ornate stern to the extensive network of masts, sails and rigging above deck.
The kit combines traditional wooden shipbuilding techniques with precision laser-cut components and fine hardwoods selected for the structure, hull planking, decking and visible finishes. Photo-etched brass provides delicate decorative details, while Zamak castings reproduce the cannons, anchors and other fittings.
Sewn cotton sails and rigging threads in different thicknesses are included to complete the vessel's impressive sailing rig. A display base and photo-etched brass nameplate provide the finishing touches.
With 7,578 parts and an estimated build time of approximately 1,000 hours, Montañés is rated Expert / Level 4 by Occre. This substantial kit is intended for experienced modellers looking for an intricate and absorbing long-term project.

HISTORY:
Montañés was a Spanish ship of the line launched at Ferrol on 14th May 1794. She represented the advanced naval architecture of the Spanish fleet during a period when European powers were competing for control of the seas.
Her distinctive figurehead depicted a highlander, or montañés, rather than the royal lion commonly found on Spanish warships. This was a tribute to the people of the mountains who had contributed financially towards her construction.
Montañés earned a reputation for her sailing qualities. Contemporary accounts praised her ability to sail close to the wind and maintain the position of her gun batteries above the water, qualities that were particularly valuable for a heavily armed warship.
She participated in several naval engagements, including the Battle of Trafalgar on 21st October 1805. During the battle, Montañés carried 76 guns and four carronades with mortars positioned on her quarterdeck.
Unlike many ships involved in the battle, Montañés survived Trafalgar and continued in Spanish naval service. Her career ended on 6th March 1810, when she sank during a violent storm off the Bay of Cádiz.
Occre's model commemorates this remarkable vessel and the craftsmanship of Spanish shipbuilding during the Age of Sail.
