HISTORY:

HMS Beagle was launched in 1820 as a Royal Navy brig before being adapted for hydrographic surveying and scientific exploration. Over the course of her career, she completed three major surveying voyages, becoming one of the most famous research vessels in maritime history.

Her best-known expedition began in December 1831, when she departed Plymouth under the command of Captain Robert FitzRoy. Among those aboard was a young naturalist named Charles Darwin, who had been invited to accompany the voyage and study the geology, plants and animals encountered along the way.

During the nearly five-year expedition, Beagle surveyed the coastlines of South America and visited destinations including the Galápagos Islands, Tahiti, New Zealand and Australia. Darwin spent much of the journey exploring on land, collecting specimens and recording observations that would later contribute to his theory of evolution by natural selection.

The expedition returned to England in October 1836. Darwin's research eventually led to the publication of On the Origin of Species in 1859, transforming scientific understanding of how species develop and change over time.

HMS Beagle continued in naval service after Darwin's voyage, completing a third surveying expedition before being assigned to coastal duties. Although the vessel herself did not survive, her contribution to exploration and scientific discovery has secured her place in history.
