Occre's extraordinary 1/50 scale wooden model captures the mystery of this phantom vessel with an exposed hull, richly detailed interior and imposing sailing rig. With 4,725 parts and a finished length of 77.5cm, it is a substantial project for experienced ship modellers.
ABOUT THE KIT:
Occre's Flying Dutchman is a fantasy wooden ship model inspired by the legendary ghost ship condemned to sail the oceans for eternity. Its weathered appearance, unusual hull design and elaborate detailing make it a distinctive alternative to a conventional historic sailing ship.
One of the model's most striking features is its open-sided hull, revealing the activity and equipment within. Detailed cannons, ammunition, hammocks, barrels and cargo create an atmospheric interior, while the masts, yards, sails and rigging provide plenty of intricate work above deck.
The kit uses a single-planked wooden hull, precision laser-cut components, fine hardwoods, photo-etched brass and detailed Zamak castings. Cotton sails and rigging threads are included, along with a basic display stand and a custom nameplate featuring tentacle detailing.
For an even more dramatic finish, the interior and lanterns can be illuminated using the optional Occre LED Lights Kit. A separate exhibition stand with tentacle-shaped supports is also available.
With 4,725 parts and an estimated build time of approximately 560 hours, the Flying Dutchman is designed for advanced modellers. Step-by-step photographic instructions, scale plans and video tutorials provide guidance throughout construction.

HISTORY:
The Flying Dutchman is a legendary ghost ship said to be doomed to sail the oceans forever, never able to reach port. The story has been told in many forms, but its central theme is a captain whose defiance in the face of a violent storm brings a curse upon his vessel and crew.
The legend became closely associated with the waters around the Cape of Good Hope, where dangerous seas and unpredictable weather made the passage particularly feared by sailors. Over time, supposed sightings of the phantom ship came to be regarded as omens of misfortune.
The Flying Dutchman has inspired novels, paintings, operas and films. Richard Wagner's opera Der fliegende Holländer, first performed in 1843, is among the best-known interpretations of the story.
The legend also appears in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series, where the Flying Dutchman is commanded by the fictional captain Davy Jones. Its supernatural appearance and connection with the depths of the sea have made it one of the franchise's most recognisable vessels.
Occre's model draws on the atmosphere of this maritime legend, presenting the Flying Dutchman as a richly detailed fantasy ship rather than a reconstruction of a documented historical vessel.
