Occre 1/54 Scale HMS Endeavour Model Kit

From humble beginnings as a coal-carrying collier to one of the most famous ships of the Age of Exploration, HMS Endeavour is forever associated with Captain James Cook's first Pacific voyage. Occre's impressive 1/54 scale wooden kit recreates the historic vessel with thousands of individual components, intricate deck detail and a full three-masted sailing rig, producing a substantial finished model measuring 815mm long.

ABOUT THE KIT:

Occre's HMS Endeavour is a highly detailed wooden model of the vessel commanded by James Cook during his first voyage to the Pacific. At 1/54 scale, the completed model measures 815mm long, 300mm wide and 680mm high.

The kit contains 4,624 parts and uses fine hardwoods of different species, selected according to the requirements of the structure, planking and visible finishes. Precision laser-cut wooden sheets provide accurately shaped components, while high-precision photo-etched brass is used for particularly fine details and Zamak castings reproduce many of the smaller fittings.

The model recreates Endeavour's broad working hull, detailed decks and extensive three-masted square rig. Its generous scale allows the many structural and decorative features of this famous exploration vessel to become prominent parts of the finished model.

Construction is supported by downloadable assembly instructions and Occre's complete series of step-by-step video tutorials, which demonstrate the construction process in detail.

Occre rates HMS Endeavour as Advanced / Level 3. With 4,624 individual parts and an estimated assembly time of approximately 650 hours, it is a substantial project intended for experienced wooden ship modellers.

HISTORY:

Endeavour began life not as a naval exploration ship, but as the Earl of Pembroke, a sturdy coal-carrying vessel built by Thomas Fishburn at Whitby in 1764. Her broad, strongly constructed hull and generous cargo capacity made her well suited to the demanding expedition the Royal Navy was planning to the Pacific.

The Royal Navy purchased the vessel in 1768, renamed her Endeavour and refitted her at Deptford. New accommodation and working spaces were created for the officers, sailors, marines and scientists who would take part in the voyage under the command of Lieutenant James Cook.

Endeavour departed Plymouth in August 1768. One of the expedition's principal objectives was to reach Tahiti to observe the transit of Venus across the Sun in June 1769, observations intended to help astronomers improve calculations of the distance between the Earth and the Sun.

After leaving Tahiti, Cook continued into the Pacific. The expedition circumnavigated and charted New Zealand before sailing west to the eastern coast of Australia in 1770. Endeavour then continued through the East Indies and around the Cape of Good Hope before returning to England in July 1771.

After her exploration career, Endeavour was eventually sold out of Royal Navy service. Renamed Lord Sandwich, she was later used as a troop transport during the American War of Independence. In 1778 she was deliberately sunk in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, as part of British efforts to obstruct the harbour ahead of a French attack.
