ABOUT THE KIT:
Occre's Albatros recreates a traditional schooner of the type used for coastal patrols, anti-smuggling operations and light naval duties. Her narrow hull and generous sail area reflect the speed and manoeuvrability that made these vessels so versatile.
The kit features traditional double plank-on-frame construction, with precision laser-cut wooden components and fine hardwoods for the hull, deck and visible finishes. Detailed fittings include boxwood blocks and deadeyes, brass eyebolts, rings and belaying pins, a metal winch and lifeboat, and eight antiqued metal cannons.
A full complement of pre-sewn sails and rigging thread is included, along with a wooden display cradle and metal nameplate. With an estimated build time of approximately 140 hours, the Albatros provides an enjoyable introduction to wooden ship construction without the complexity of a larger warship.

HISTORY:
Schooners were widely used during the 18th and 19th centuries for commercial transport, coastal patrols and naval operations. Their fore-and-aft rigging allowed them to sail efficiently with relatively small crews, while their narrow hulls and generous sail areas provided excellent speed and manoeuvrability.
The Albatros represents a schooner of the type associated with the American Atlantic coast during the 19th century. Vessels of this design were particularly useful for coastguard duties and the interception of smugglers, as they could pursue smaller ships and operate effectively in coastal waters.
Some schooners also served as small warships, carrying light artillery and undertaking patrols, reconnaissance and escort duties. Their versatility made them valuable vessels for both civilian and military service.
