Occre 1/85 Scale Fram Model Kit

Built to survive the crushing pressure of Arctic pack ice, Fram became one of the most remarkable exploration ships ever constructed. Occre's detailed 1/85 scale kit recreates the famous Norwegian vessel with its distinctive rounded hull, working-ship deck detail and full sailing rig, resulting in an impressive 586mm long model.

ABOUT THE KIT:

Occre's Fram is a detailed wooden model of the purpose-built polar exploration ship designed by renowned Norwegian naval architect Colin Archer. At 1/85 scale, the completed model measures 586mm long, 205mm wide and 441mm high.

The kit contains 1,974 parts and combines fine hardwoods with precision laser-cut wooden sheets, photo-etched brass components, Zamak cast fittings and cotton textiles. Sails and rigging threads in different thicknesses are included to complete Fram's distinctive three-masted rig.

A basic construction and display stand is supplied along with a custom nameplate. Comprehensive building support includes scale drawings, instructions in five languages, high-definition step-by-step photographs, a detailed parts list and a complete series of step-by-step video tutorials.

Occre rates the Fram as an Intermediate Level 2 kit, with an estimated assembly time of approximately 480 hours. Its combination of detailed wooden construction, extensive fittings and rigging makes it a substantial project for modellers looking to progress beyond beginner-level ship kits.

HISTORY:

Fram, whose name means 'Forward' in Norwegian, was designed by naval architect Colin Archer specifically for polar exploration and launched in 1892. Her unusually strong and rounded hull was designed so that, rather than being crushed when trapped by pack ice, the pressure would force the ship upwards onto the ice.

Fridtjof Nansen used Fram for his ambitious Arctic expedition of 1893–1896. His plan was deliberately to freeze the ship into the pack ice and allow the natural movement of the Arctic ice to carry the expedition across the polar region. Fram remained trapped in the ice for almost three years before emerging safely.

From 1898 to 1902, Otto Sverdrup commanded Fram on a second major expedition, exploring and mapping extensive areas of the Canadian Arctic.

Fram's third great expedition began in 1910 under Roald Amundsen. Sailing south to Antarctica, the ship transported the expedition that would see Amundsen and his team become the first people to reach the South Pole on 14th December 1911.

Having served on expeditions to both polar regions, Fram travelled farther north and farther south than any other wooden ship. The original vessel has survived and is preserved at the Fram Museum in Oslo, Norway.
