Amati 1/200 Scale Battleship Bismarck Model Kit
Build one of the most famous battleships of the Second World War with this exceptionally detailed 1/200 scale model from Amati. Combining traditional wooden hull construction with more than 2,200 photo-etched components, plastic superstructures, metal fittings and finely reproduced armament, this imposing kit produces a finished Bismarck measuring approximately 1.27 metres long.
ABOUT THE KIT:
Amati's Bismarck is a large and highly detailed 1/200 scale model designed for experienced builders. The hull uses traditional plank-on-frame construction with double planking, supported by a precision laser-cut keel and frames.
The kit includes a shaped and engraved wooden deck covering, while 16 laser-cut plywood sheets provide many of the structural components. An extensive selection of 2,266 photo-etched parts allows the railings, fittings and other fine details of the battleship to be reproduced with impressive precision.
The superstructures and the ship's Arado reconnaissance aircraft are supplied as detailed plastic components. Metal and wooden accessories are included throughout the model, while the main armament is enhanced with brass and steel gun barrels. Nylon rigging is also supplied.
Construction is supported by two full-colour assembly instruction books and six detailed construction plans. Painting schemes are provided for both the hull and Arado aircraft, while a full-colour poster of the completed model is also included.
A nameplate display base is supplied for presenting the finished Bismarck. Amati rates this extensive kit at Difficulty Level 5, making it best suited to experienced model makers looking for a substantial long-term project.

HISTORY:
Bismarck was the first of two Bismarck-class battleships built for Germany's Kriegsmarine and was named after the 19th-century German statesman Otto von Bismarck. Her keel was laid at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg in July 1936, she was launched on 14th February 1939 and commissioned into service in August 1940.
In May 1941, Bismarck departed alongside the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen for Operation Rheinübung, an attempt to attack Allied merchant shipping in the North Atlantic. The operation led to an encounter with HMS Hood and HMS Prince of Wales in the Denmark Strait on 24th May.
During the Battle of the Denmark Strait, Bismarck and Prinz Eugen engaged the two British warships. HMS Hood suffered a catastrophic magazine explosion and sank with the loss of all but three of her crew, while Prince of Wales was damaged and withdrew. Bismarck was also damaged during the engagement and subsequently headed towards occupied France for repairs.
The Royal Navy launched a major effort to locate and intercept the battleship. On 26th May, aircraft from HMS Ark Royal attacked Bismarck with torpedoes, with one hit jamming her rudders and leaving her unable to steer effectively.
British warships caught Bismarck the following morning. After an intense engagement on 27th May 1941, the battleship was disabled and sank in the North Atlantic. Her operational career had lasted only a matter of months, but the events surrounding her single wartime sortie made Bismarck one of the best-known battleships of the Second World War.
