Occre 1/85 Scale Golden Hind Model Kit
Follow in the wake of one of the most famous voyages of the Elizabethan age with Occre's 1/85 scale Golden Hind. Designed as an accessible introduction to wooden ship modelling, this 2,370-part kit combines a detailed galleon hull, period fittings, full sailing rig and sewn cotton sails in a finished model measuring 643mm long.
ABOUT THE KIT:
Occre's Golden Hind recreates the celebrated galleon associated with Sir Francis Drake's circumnavigation of the globe. At 1/85 scale, the completed model measures 643mm long, 230mm wide and 450mm high.
The kit uses fine hardwoods of different species for the structure, hull covering and visible finishes, with precision laser-cut wooden sheets helping to provide an accurate fit. High-precision photo-etched brass components reproduce finer details, while Zamak castings are used for small fittings and other detailed elements.
Cotton sails are included, together with threads of different thicknesses for the rigging and textile detailing. A basic display stand and photo-etched brass nameplate bearing the Golden Hind name are also supplied.
Despite containing 2,370 parts and offering approximately 170 hours of construction, Occre rates the Golden Hind as Beginner / Level 1. Step-by-step video tutorials are available to accompany the build, making it a particularly appealing choice for those looking to begin wooden ship modelling with a substantial historic vessel.

HISTORY:
On 13th December 1577, Francis Drake left Plymouth at the head of an expedition of five ships. His flagship was originally named Pelican, but during the voyage Drake renamed her Golden Hind in honour of Sir Christopher Hatton, one of the expedition's principal patrons, whose coat of arms featured a golden hind.
The expedition passed through the Strait of Magellan and entered the Pacific, where Drake continued northwards along the western coast of South America. The voyage combined exploration with attacks on Spanish shipping and settlements, resulting in the capture of considerable treasure.
Drake continued across the Pacific and Indian Oceans before rounding the Cape of Good Hope and returning to England in September 1580. Golden Hind was the only vessel from the original expedition to complete the entire journey, making Drake the first Englishman to circumnavigate the globe and the expedition the second successful circumnavigation in history.
In April 1581, Queen Elizabeth I visited Golden Hind at Deptford and Drake was knighted aboard the ship. The vessel was subsequently preserved as a public attraction, an unusual honour for a ship of the period.
Golden Hind eventually deteriorated and was broken up during the 17th century, but her association with Drake's extraordinary voyage has ensured her place among the best-known sailing ships of the Elizabethan era.
