HISTORY:

Built in 1872, the Gjøa was a modest Norwegian fishing vessel measuring just 21 metres in length. Despite her small size, she would become one of the most significant ships in the history of polar exploration.

In 1903, Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen set sail aboard the Gjøa with a crew of six, determined to navigate the Northwest Passage, the Arctic sea route connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The expedition spent three winters in the Arctic, during which Amundsen and his crew carried out scientific observations and learned valuable survival techniques from the local Inuit population.

In 1906, the Gjøa completed the first successful navigation of the Northwest Passage, achieving a goal that had eluded explorers for centuries. The vessel is now preserved at the Fram Museum in Oslo, Norway, alongside Amundsen's later polar exploration ship, the Fram.
