Victory Models 1/64 Scale HMS Fly Model Kit

Discover the craftsmanship of an 18th-century Royal Navy sloop with this beautifully detailed 1/64 scale HMS Fly from Victory Models by Amati. With her sleek hull, elegant stern decoration and intricate sailing rig, Fly offers a rewarding project for modellers who enjoy fine detail and traditional wooden ship construction.

ABOUT THE KIT:

HMS Fly was one of the Royal Navy's Swan-class sloops, a group of vessels admired for their graceful lines and unusually elaborate decoration. This kit is based on the ship's surviving original plans, allowing modellers to recreate her distinctive appearance at an impressive 810mm in length.

The hull features double plank-on-frame construction, with precision laser-cut birch plywood for the keel and bulkheads. Limewood and walnut strips are supplied for planking, alongside tanganyika wood for the decking and walnut components for smaller details.

An extensive selection of metal fittings and photo-etched brass parts reproduces the vessel's decorative features, including the figurehead, stern ornamentation and fine hull details. Wooden components, rigging thread and fittings are included to complete the masts and rigging.

Construction is supported by illustrated instructions and 12 detailed plans, providing guidance through the hull, deck fittings and rigging. Designed for intermediate to experienced modellers, HMS Fly offers an absorbing build with plenty of opportunity to develop traditional shipbuilding skills.

HISTORY:

HMS Fly was the fifth of 25 Swan-class sloops built for the Royal Navy between 1766 and 1780. The class was noted for its sleek hull lines and unusually fine decoration, giving these relatively small warships an elegant appearance.

Fly was ordered by the Admiralty in August 1775. Her keel was laid at Sheerness Dockyard in January 1776, and she was launched and completed in September of the same year.

The Swan-class sloops measured approximately 97 feet 7 inches along the gun deck and displaced around 300 tons. They carried a complement of approximately 125 officers and men and were employed on duties including escorting merchant vessels, carrying dispatches and patrolling shipping routes.

During her service, Fly captured the French privateer Le Gleneur off Portland following a lengthy chase. In 1800, she captured another privateer, Trompeur, near La Hague.

Although smaller than the great ships of the line, sloops such as Fly played an important role in the Royal Navy. Their speed and versatility made them useful for the everyday work of protecting trade, communicating between fleets and intercepting enemy vessels.
