Victory Models 1/64 Scale HMS Cutter Lady Nelson Model Kit

With her sleek hull, single mast and impressive spread of sail, Lady Nelson captures the distinctive appearance of a British naval cutter. This 1/64 scale wooden model from Victory Models by Amati features double-planked hull construction, detailed brass fittings and a display base, making it an excellent introduction to traditional wooden shipbuilding.

ABOUT THE KIT:

Lady Nelson is based on a typical British cutter of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Originally developed for speed and manoeuvrability, these versatile vessels were used by the Royal Navy for coastal patrols, customs duties and the interception of smugglers.

Designed with beginner and intermediate modellers in mind, the kit features precision laser-cut wooden components, traditional double hull planking and a selection of wooden and metal fittings. Photo-etched brass decorations, rigging thread and an adhesive cloth flag add the finishing touches.

The kit also includes an MDF display base with two brass columns, allowing you to present your completed model. An instruction booklet and five detailed construction plans provide guidance throughout the build.

HISTORY:

Lady Nelson was a British cutter built at Deptford in 1799 and purchased by the Royal Navy in 1800. Her sleek hull and generous sail area made her well suited to the patrol and customs duties for which cutters were widely employed.

The cutter design had originally become popular among smugglers operating around Folkestone and the surrounding English coast. Their speed and manoeuvrability made them difficult to intercept, prompting the Royal Navy to adopt similar vessels for its own anti-smuggling operations.

Cutters typically carried a large spread of sail on a single mast, combining fore-and-aft sails with square sails to provide speed and versatility. Their relatively small size and efficient rigging also made them useful for carrying messages, reconnaissance and coastal patrols.

Lady Nelson remained in service until 1825, representing a distinctive type of vessel that played an important role in British naval and customs operations during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
