HISTORY:
HMS Cornwall was a Kent-subclass County-class heavy cruiser built for the Royal Navy. Laid down at Devonport Dockyard in October 1924, she was launched in March 1926 and completed in May 1928.
Much of Cornwall's early career was spent with the China Station. During the 1930s she returned to Britain for an extensive modernisation before resuming overseas service as international tensions moved towards the Second World War.
Following the outbreak of war, Cornwall took part in patrol and convoy duties while searching for German commerce raiders. In May 1941 she intercepted the German auxiliary cruiser Pinguin in the Indian Ocean. After an engagement, Pinguin was sunk.
Following Japan's entry into the war, Cornwall continued convoy duties before joining the Royal Navy's Eastern Fleet in 1942. On 5th April 1942, during the Japanese Indian Ocean Raid, Cornwall and fellow heavy cruiser HMS Dorsetshire were attacked south-west of Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, by carrier-based Japanese dive bombers.
Both cruisers were overwhelmed by the aerial attack and sunk. HMS Cornwall's loss brought to an end a service career that had taken the cruiser from peacetime operations in the Far East to combat across the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
