Compact, fast and heavily armed for her size, HMS President represents the light frigates that served the British fleet during the 18th century. This 1/60 scale wooden model from Mantua Models features a double-planked hull, detailed brass fittings and an elegant sailing rig, with a finished length of 52cm.
ABOUT THE KIT:
Mantua Models' HMS President is based on a typical English light frigate of the period around 1750. These smaller warships combined speed and manoeuvrability with sufficient firepower for patrols, reconnaissance and escort duties.
The kit features traditional double plank-on-frame construction, with precision laser-cut plywood components and walnut or limewood hull planking. Wooden masts and spars, lost-wax brass castings, etched brass details and a selection of brass and walnut fittings bring the vessel's distinctive appearance to life.
Detailed deck fittings, artillery and rigging provide plenty of opportunities to develop traditional shipbuilding skills, while the included construction plans and English instructions guide you through assembly.

HISTORY:
During the first half of the 18th century, Britain developed a growing fleet of smaller, fast and manoeuvrable warships to support its expanding maritime trade and overseas interests. Light frigates were particularly valuable for duties that did not require the size or firepower of a ship of the line.
These vessels could patrol coastal waters, escort merchant shipping, carry dispatches and scout ahead of larger fleets. Their relatively slender hulls and efficient sailing rigs allowed them to respond quickly to changing conditions and pursue smaller enemy vessels.
HMS President represents the type of English light frigate associated with the period around 1750, when naval powers increasingly relied on versatile warships to protect trade routes and support their larger battle fleets.
