ABOUT THE KIT:
Mantua Models' Mississippi 1870 is a detailed wooden model inspired by the paddle steamers that operated on American rivers from the 1870s through to the 1920s. With its distinctive stern paddlewheel, towering smokestacks and elegant multi-deck superstructure, the finished model makes a spectacular display piece.
The kit features traditional double plank-on-frame hull construction using walnut and limewood, with laser-cut plywood components for accurate assembly. Lost-wax brass castings, etched brass details, wooden fittings and silk flags bring the vessel to life, while building plans and English instructions guide you through construction.

HISTORY:
Mississippi paddle steamers became an iconic feature of American river travel during the 19th century. Their shallow-draught hulls allowed them to navigate inland waterways that were inaccessible to deeper-hulled vessels, carrying passengers, agricultural produce and other goods between towns and cities along the Mississippi River and its tributaries.
During the 1870s, these vessels were an important part of American commerce and culture. Their distinctive paddlewheels, tall smokestacks and ornate passenger decks became symbols of the Mississippi, while the stories of Mark Twain helped establish their lasting place in popular imagination.
Although railways gradually reduced the importance of commercial river transport, paddle steamers continued operating into the 20th century. Today, their distinctive appearance remains closely associated with the history and romance of America's great rivers.
