Designed under Sir William Stanier, the LMS Princess Coronation Class, also known as the Duchess Class, was developed as an enlarged and improved version of the successful Princess Royal Class. The first members of the class emerged from Crewe Works in streamlined form in 1937, with five locomotives built to haul the prestigious 'Coronation Scot' service between London Euston and Glasgow Central.
No. 6220 'Coronation' entered service in 1937 in its distinctive Caledonian blue and silver livery. During trials that year, the locomotive reached 114mph, setting a new British steam speed record before it was surpassed by LNER 'Mallard' in 1938. Its streamlined casing was removed in 1946 and the locomotive later became BR No. 46220, remaining in service until 1963.
