HISTORY:

It was the fastest aircraft ever introduced into operational service in the Air Force. It was designed at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s on behalf of the CIA but was also operated by NASA and the USAF.

The SR-71 is a long-range strategic reconnaissance aircraft, reaching a speed of Mach 3.5 and a ceiling of 26,000 meters, making it untraceable for the defence systems of that time.

A total of 32 SR-71s were built. Due to the very high costs of maintaining this aircraft and the infrastructure necessary for its operation, it was withdrawn in the late 1980s. Now, the role of SR-71 aircraft has been taken over by reconnaissance satellites and drones. The last flight of this type of aircraft took place on October 9, 1999.
