Billing Boats 1/72 Scale America Racing Yacht Model Kit
The schooner that gave the America's Cup its name, America made sailing history with her decisive victory around the Isle of Wight in 1851. Billing Boats' 1/72 scale wooden model recreates the famous racing yacht with her sleek hull, twin-masted schooner rig and expansive sail plan, producing an elegant finished model measuring 560mm long.
ABOUT THE KIT:
Billing Boats' America recreates the celebrated 19th-century racing schooner at 1/72 scale. The completed model measures 560mm long, 100mm wide and 450mm high, providing an attractive display size while retaining plenty of detail throughout the hull and rigging.
The kit features a wooden hull and recreates America's distinctive low, streamlined profile and two-masted schooner rig. The extensive sail and rigging arrangement forms a major part of the finished model and captures the graceful appearance of the yacht that became synonymous with international sailing competition.
Construction is supported by detailed drawings, a dedicated mast and sail plan and assembly instructions. Billing Boats rates America as an Advanced Beginner kit, making it suitable for modellers who have already gained some experience and are ready to progress to a more involved wooden sailing vessel.

HISTORY:
America was a racing schooner built in New York in 1851 for a syndicate of members of the New York Yacht Club. Designed by James Rich Steers and George Steers, her fast and innovative hull was intended to demonstrate American yacht-building expertise against the finest British competition.
In 1851, America crossed the Atlantic and entered the Royal Yacht Squadron's Hundred Guinea Cup, a 53-mile race around the Isle of Wight. Racing against 14 British yachts, America took a convincing victory and secured the trophy.
Queen Victoria visited the yacht on 25th August 1851, further adding to the attention generated by America's success in British waters.
The trophy won by America was later donated to the New York Yacht Club under a Deed of Gift establishing an international sailing challenge. It became known as the America's Cup in honour of the schooner and developed into one of the world's most prestigious and long-running sporting competitions.
America herself went on to have a varied career under several owners and later served during the American Civil War. Although the original yacht no longer survives, her name remains permanently associated with the competition created from her famous 1851 victory.
