With its unmistakable dragon-headed prow, overlapping hull planks and broad square sail, the Viking longboat became one of the defining vessels of the Norse world. Amati's 1/50 scale wooden kit recreates a classic Viking Drakkar with laser-cut components, detailed fittings and a full sailing rig, producing an impressive finished model measuring 440mm long.
ABOUT THE KIT:
Amati's Viking Longboat is a detailed wooden model inspired by the famous Drakkar warships of the Viking Age. At 1/50 scale, the completed model measures 440mm long, 140mm wide and 300mm high.
The kit features laser-cut components for the keel, frames and hull planking, together with wood for planking the deck. The characteristic Viking hull is complemented by a wooden mast and yard, with rigging thread and sail cloth supplied to recreate the vessel's simple but effective sailing rig.
A selection of wooden and metal accessories is included to add detail throughout the vessel. Construction is supported by a full-colour instruction booklet and two detailed construction plans.
The finished model captures the distinctive features associated with Viking ships, including the shallow double-ended hull, overlapping planking, single square sail and imposing dragon-headed prow.

HISTORY:
This model represents a Viking Drakkar rather than one specific surviving historical vessel. Drakkars were long, fast vessels associated particularly with warfare and raiding, combining a shallow draught with a light and manoeuvrable hull.
Their characteristic clinker construction used overlapping wooden hull planks, creating a strong but relatively lightweight vessel. The shallow hull allowed Viking ships to travel through coastal waters and rivers as well as cross open seas, while their double-ended form meant they could reverse direction without needing to turn around.
Amati associates its model with Ormen Lange, or the Long Serpent, the celebrated ship of Norwegian king Olaf Tryggvason. The manufacturer describes the Drakkar as a vessel that could reach considerable dimensions, with some examples extending to around 48 metres in length.
Ships of this general type have become enduring symbols of the Viking Age, reflecting the sophisticated shipbuilding skills that enabled Norse sailors to travel across large areas of Europe and the North Atlantic.
