Flagship of Christopher Columbus's 1492 expedition, Santa Maria is one of the most recognisable sailing ships in history. Amati's detailed 1/65 scale wooden kit recreates the vessel with double hull planking, sewn sails and a full three-masted rig, producing an impressive finished model measuring 540mm long.
ABOUT THE KIT:
Amati's Santa Maria is a traditional wooden model ship kit depicting the largest of the three vessels that sailed on Columbus's first Atlantic voyage. At 1/65 scale, the completed model measures 540mm long, 160mm wide and 500mm high.
The hull is built around a precision laser-cut wooden keel and frames before being finished with double planking. Wood and metal accessories are supplied for the deck and finer details, along with the materials required to reproduce the vessel's masts and extensive rigging.
Sewn sails are included to complete Santa Maria's distinctive three-masted sail plan, together with rigging threads and an adhesive flag. The combination of double planking and a substantial sailing rig provides plenty of traditional wooden ship modelling work throughout the build.
Construction is supported by two full-colour instruction booklets and two detailed construction plans, providing clear reference throughout assembly.

HISTORY:
Santa Maria was the largest of the three vessels used during Christopher Columbus's first voyage across the Atlantic in 1492, sailing alongside Pinta and Niña. Columbus referred to her as a 'nao' rather than a caravel, and she served as the expedition's flagship.
Originally known as La Gallega, the vessel was owned and captained by the experienced Spanish navigator and cartographer Juan de la Cosa. Columbus and his expedition departed Spain in August 1492 before continuing westwards from the Canary Islands in September.
After more than a month crossing the Atlantic, the expedition reached the Caribbean on 12th October 1492. Over the following months, the three ships explored a number of islands in the region.
Santa Maria's own voyage came to an end on Christmas Day 1492, when she ran aground off the coast of Hispaniola and could not be refloated. Timber from the wreck was used to construct a small settlement known as La Navidad, where a number of men were left behind while Columbus returned to Europe aboard Niña.
The voyage initiated sustained European contact with the Americas and had enormous consequences for the Indigenous peoples already living there, beginning a period of European colonisation, conquest and profound demographic and cultural change.
