Amati 1/65 Scale Pinta Caravel of Columbus Model Ship Kit
Fast, compact and forever associated with Christopher Columbus's first Atlantic voyage, Pinta was one of the three vessels that departed Spain in 1492. Amati's 1/65 scale wooden model recreates the famous caravel with double hull planking, sewn sails and a distinctive three-masted rig, producing a detailed finished model 450mm long.
ABOUT THE KIT:
Amati's Pinta is a traditional wooden model ship kit based on one of the three vessels that accompanied Christopher Columbus on his 1492 voyage across the Atlantic. At 1/65 scale, the completed model measures 450mm long, 120mm wide and 380mm high.
The hull is constructed around a precision laser-cut wooden keel and frames before being finished with double planking. Wood and metal accessories are supplied for the deck and finer details, together with masts and rigging materials.
Sewn sails are included to reproduce Pinta's distinctive rig, consisting of square sails on the foremast and mainmast together with a triangular lateen sail on the mizzenmast. An adhesive flag is also supplied to complete the model.
Construction is supported by two full-colour instruction booklets and two detailed construction plans, providing guidance throughout the build.

HISTORY:
Pinta was one of the three vessels that sailed with Christopher Columbus on his first voyage across the Atlantic in 1492, alongside Niña and the larger Santa María. She was commanded by Martín Alonso Pinzón.
Details of Pinta's construction are limited, but Amati describes her as approximately 22.75 metres long and 6.6 metres wide, with a crew of 26 men and a speed of around eight knots. She was reputedly the fastest of the three ships in Columbus's fleet.
Pinta and Niña were originally lateen-rigged caravels. During the expedition's stop in the Canary Islands, Pinta was converted to a square-rigged configuration, a substantial operation that included replacing a mast and contributed to a delay of several weeks.
The expedition departed the Canary Islands in September 1492 and crossed the Atlantic. On 12th October, a sailor aboard Pinta, traditionally identified as Rodrigo de Triana, sighted land, marking the fleet's arrival in the Caribbean.
Pinta later became separated from Niña during the return voyage across the Atlantic. Both vessels nevertheless reached Europe in March 1493, completing a voyage that would have profound and devastating consequences for the Indigenous peoples of the Americas and permanently reshape relations between Europe and the Americas.
