Amati 1/100 Scale Bluenose 1921 Fishing Schooner Model Kit
Built to work the unforgiving fishing grounds of the North Atlantic and fast enough to dominate international competition, Bluenose became one of Canada's most celebrated sailing vessels. Amati's 1/100 scale wooden kit recreates the famous 1921 schooner with a double-planked hull, detailed fittings and her impressive gaff-rigged sail plan, producing a finished model 540mm long.
ABOUT THE KIT:
Amati's Bluenose recreates the famous Canadian fishing and racing schooner at 1/100 scale. The completed model measures 540mm long and combines traditional wooden ship construction with a manageable finished size.
The hull is constructed using double planking over bulkheads, with pre-cut wooden components forming the basis of the model. Wooden and metal fittings are supplied to add detail throughout the hull and deck, together with the masts, spars and rope required to reproduce the schooner's distinctive rig.
Sail cloth is included for completing Bluenose's extensive sail plan, while a highly detailed instruction booklet guides the modeller through each stage of construction.
Hobbies rates the kit as suitable for beginner to intermediate model makers, making it an accessible introduction to more detailed plank-on-bulkhead wooden ship construction.

HISTORY:
Bluenose was a Canadian fishing and racing schooner designed by naval architect William James Roué and built by Smith & Rhuland in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. She was launched on 26th March 1921 and began her working life on the demanding fishing grounds of the North Atlantic.
Although designed as a genuine working fishing vessel, Bluenose was also created with racing performance in mind. In October 1921 she competed for the International Fishermen's Trophy, a competition reserved for working fishing schooners from Nova Scotia and New England. Captained by Angus Walters, Bluenose defeated the American schooner Elsie to secure the trophy in her first season.
That victory began an extraordinary racing career. Over the following 17 years, challengers from both Canada and the United States attempted to take the International Fishermen's Trophy from Bluenose, but none succeeded. Her combination of speed and success made her a source of considerable pride in Nova Scotia and eventually a national Canadian icon.
Bluenose continued working as a fishing and trading vessel after her racing career. She was eventually sold and used to carry freight in the Caribbean before being wrecked on a reef near Haiti in 1946.
Her legacy has endured long after the loss of the original vessel. Bluenose became one of Canada's most recognisable maritime symbols, and her image has appeared on the Canadian ten-cent coin for generations.
