Amati 1/65 Scale Nina Period Model Kit
Compact, elegant and steeped in maritime history, Niña was the smallest of the three vessels that sailed on Christopher Columbus's first Atlantic voyage in 1492. Amati's 1/65 scale wooden model recreates the famous caravel with double hull planking, sewn sails and a detailed three-masted rig, making it a rewarding project for intermediate wooden ship modellers.
ABOUT THE KIT:
Amati's Niña is a traditional wooden model ship kit depicting one of the three vessels used during Columbus's 1492 expedition. At 1/65 scale, the completed model measures 370mm long, 110mm wide and 430mm high.
The hull is constructed around a precision laser-cut wooden keel and frames before being finished with double planking. Laser-cut deck components are also included, together with wooden and metal accessories for adding detail throughout the model.
Sewn sails and rigging thread are supplied to recreate Niña's distinctive sailing rig, while an adhesive flag provides the finishing touch. The kit also includes masts, wooden planking and the fittings required to complete the vessel.
Construction is supported by two full-colour instruction booklets and two detailed construction plans. With its double-planked hull and extensive rigging, this kit is rated at Intermediate difficulty.

HISTORY:
Niña was one of the three vessels that sailed with Christopher Columbus on his first voyage across the Atlantic in 1492, alongside Pinta and Santa María. Her official name was Santa Clara, while Niña was a nickname traditionally associated with her owner, Juan Niño.
Niña and Pinta were both caravels, smaller and more manoeuvrable than the larger Santa María. Contemporary information about their exact construction is limited, but both vessels are known to have originally carried lateen sails.
Niña survived the outward voyage and, following the loss of Santa María off Hispaniola on Christmas Day 1492, became particularly important to the expedition. Columbus travelled aboard Niña during the return journey to Europe.
Niña reached Spain in March 1493 and subsequently took part in further voyages across the Atlantic. She proved to be a remarkably durable vessel and remained associated with Columbus's expeditions for several years.
The 1492 voyage initiated sustained European contact with the Americas and had profound consequences for the Indigenous peoples already living there, beginning a period of European colonisation, conquest and major demographic and cultural change.
