HISTORY:
During the Golden Age of Piracy, roughly spanning the late 17th and early 18th centuries, pirates operated throughout the Caribbean, Atlantic Ocean and other major shipping routes.
There was no single type of pirate ship. Crews generally used vessels they had captured, choosing ships that suited their needs and modifying them where necessary. Speed, manoeuvrability and sufficient space for crew, weapons and stolen cargo were often more important than size alone.
Smaller sailing vessels could be particularly useful to pirates, allowing them to pursue merchant ships and escape larger naval warships. Captured vessels might be fitted with additional guns or altered to accommodate a larger crew.
Amati’s Pirate Ship is a general representation of these adventurous vessels rather than a model of a specific documented ship, leaving plenty of scope to create your own pirate legend.
