HISTORY:
Mayflower was an English merchant ship best known for carrying a group of English settlers, now commonly known as the Pilgrims, to North America in 1620.
Many of the passengers were religious Separatists seeking the freedom to practise their faith outside the Church of England. Others joined the voyage for economic opportunities or the prospect of establishing a new life overseas.
After earlier attempts to depart were disrupted by problems with another vessel, Speedwell, Mayflower finally sailed from Plymouth, England, in September 1620 with 102 passengers aboard.
The Atlantic crossing was difficult, with rough weather and cramped conditions. After approximately 66 days at sea, the ship reached Cape Cod in present-day Massachusetts, considerably farther north than the intended destination in Virginia.
Before going ashore, 41 adult male passengers signed the Mayflower Compact, an agreement establishing a framework for governing their new settlement. The passengers subsequently established Plymouth Colony on land already inhabited by the Wampanoag people.
Mayflower returned to England in 1621. Although her precise fate is uncertain, the ship's voyage remains one of the most widely recognised events in early American colonial history.
