ABOUT THE KIT:
Occre's La Candelaria recreates a Mediterranean bomb vessel, a specialised warship designed to serve as a floating artillery battery during blockades and coastal sieges. Her broad hull, centrally positioned mainmast and smaller mizzen mast reflect the unusual design required to accommodate her heavy mortars.
The kit combines traditional wooden shipbuilding techniques with precision laser-cut components, fine hardwoods, photo-etched brass and cast metal fittings. Detailed artillery, deck equipment and decorative features bring the vessel to life, while sewn cotton sails and rigging materials complete her distinctive appearance.
With 2,866 parts and an estimated build time of approximately 560 hours, La Candelaria offers a substantial project for intermediate-level wooden ship modellers. A basic display stand and photo-etched brass nameplate are included to present the completed vessel.

HISTORY:
Bomb vessels were specialised warships developed to attack fortified positions from the sea. Unlike conventional warships, which relied primarily on cannons firing along relatively flat trajectories, bomb vessels carried heavy mortars capable of launching explosive shells high over defensive walls.
The design emerged in France during the late 17th century and was used during the bombardment of Algiers in 1682. Bomb vessels subsequently became valuable additions to European fleets, particularly during coastal sieges and operations against fortified harbours.
La Candelaria represents a Mediterranean bomb vessel of the type employed by the Spanish Navy. Approximately the size of a brig but with a broader hull, she was designed around the requirements of her two mortars.
Her mainmast was positioned almost centrally to provide sufficient space for the artillery between the mast and forecastle. A smaller mizzen mast carried a gaff sail, while the mainmast supported a square rig.
These vessels served as floating batteries during blockades and sieges, allowing naval forces to bombard positions that were difficult to reach with conventional shipboard artillery. Their specialised construction demonstrates how warship design evolved to meet the changing demands of naval warfare.
