HISTORY:
Bounty was built in 1783 as a cargo ship and purchased by the Royal Navy in 1787 for a voyage to collect breadfruit plants from Tahiti. The intention was to transport the plants to the Caribbean, where breadfruit was expected to provide an inexpensive food source for enslaved people working on sugar plantations.
Under the command of Lieutenant William Bligh, Bounty departed England on 23rd December 1787. After a lengthy voyage, she reached Tahiti later than planned and remained there for several months before beginning the return journey.
On 28th April 1789, a mutiny broke out aboard Bounty, led by Fletcher Christian. Bligh and 18 loyal crew members were forced into the ship's open launch and set adrift, while the mutineers took control of the vessel.
Despite having limited supplies and no charts, Bligh navigated the small boat across thousands of miles of open sea, eventually reaching Timor after 41 days. His voyage became one of the most remarkable feats of small-boat navigation in maritime history.
The mutiny aboard Bounty has since inspired numerous books and films, ensuring that the ship and the people involved remain familiar names more than two centuries later.
