Occre 1/70 Scale Endurance Wooden Model Ship Kit

Build the ship at the centre of one of history's most extraordinary survival stories. Occre's 1/70 scale Endurance recreates Sir Ernest Shackleton's famous Antarctic expedition vessel, complete with her distinctive wooden hull, three-masted sailing rig and detailed deck fittings. With 3,292 parts and a finished length of 75.4cm, this kit offers an absorbing project for wooden ship modellers.

ABOUT THE KIT:

Occre's Endurance captures the appearance of the vessel used during Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914–1917. Her sturdy hull, three-masted rig and detailed deck arrangement reflect the character of a ship built to operate in challenging polar waters.

The kit features traditional plank-on-frame construction, with precision laser-cut wooden components and fine hardwoods selected for the structure, hull planking, decking and visible finishes. Photo-etched brass provides delicate detailing, while Zamak cast metal fittings reproduce smaller components throughout the vessel.

Sewn cotton sails and rigging threads in different thicknesses are included to complete the ship's distinctive sailing rig. A basic display stand and photo-etched brass nameplate provide the finishing touches.

With 3,292 parts and an estimated build time of approximately 480 hours, Endurance is rated Intermediate / Level 2 by Occre. Step-by-step photographic instructions, scale drawings and video tutorials provide guidance throughout construction.

HISTORY:

Endurance was launched in Norway on 17th December 1912 under the name Polaris. Originally intended for polar tourism, she was purchased by Sir Ernest Shackleton in 1914 for his ambitious Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, which aimed to complete the first land crossing of Antarctica.

Renamed Endurance, the ship departed Britain in August 1914 and entered the Weddell Sea in January 1915. Before reaching the Antarctic coast, she became trapped in dense pack ice. The crew spent months aboard the immobilised vessel as the ice carried her through the frozen sea.

Increasing pressure from the surrounding ice eventually damaged the hull beyond repair. Shackleton ordered the crew to abandon ship in October 1915, and Endurance sank on 21st November. All 28 men survived the loss of the vessel, but they were stranded far from safety.

After months camping on drifting ice, the expedition reached Elephant Island in the ship's lifeboats. Shackleton and five companions then set out aboard the small boat James Caird, navigating approximately 800 miles of the Southern Ocean to reach South Georgia.

Following further attempts to organise a rescue, Shackleton returned to Elephant Island on 30th August 1916 and brought the remaining men to safety. Remarkably, every member of Endurance's crew survived.

In March 2022, the wreck of Endurance was discovered approximately 3,000 metres beneath the Weddell Sea. Despite having spent more than a century underwater, the ship was found in an exceptional state of preservation, bringing renewed attention to Shackleton's remarkable expedition.
